BPMN-Export

Modified on Mon, 28 Jul at 5:57 PM

8.4.0

Starting with version 8.4, you can export the workflow as a BPMN 2.0 diagram, either as an image (SVG, PNG) or as a standardized BPMN XML. The image export may be useful when you wish to archive a snapshot of a process. The BPMN XML may be useful, when you wish to import the diagram in another tool.

BPMN export tab for a simple workflow. Use the buttons at the top left to download the BPMN diagram, either as an image or as a standardized XML file.

Starting the export

To start the export, click on the BPMN button. The button is either directly inside the toolbar at the top of the designer (workflow designer) or within the more menu (other tabs).

Once you click on the button, a new tab opens for the BPMN export. In the center, you can view a preview of the BPMN diagram.

Use the buttons at the top left to download the diagramm, either as a PNG or SVG image file; or as a BPMN XML file.

  • SVG (vector graphics) is always sharp, regardless of the zoom level.
  • PNG (pixel graphics) has a fixed resolution and cannot be zoomed indefinitely. Also, due to browser constraints, the PNG export is unavailable when the workflow is too large.
  • The BPMN XML is an XML file that adheres to the BPMN-2.0 standard. You can import this file in all tools that also support this standard.

Toolbar

The toolbar at the top offers you a few actions and options:

  • Monochrome / Colorized

  • Expanded / Collapsed
Controls how to display sub processes in the BPMN diagram. When expanded, sub processes and their contents are shown directly within the digram. When collapsed, the content of each sub process is omitted. Click on a sub process to enter the sub process and show its content. If you wish to download an image, consider the expanded view. The collapsed view provides a quick overview and may help with some BPMN tools.
  • Processing chains

  • Zoom in / Zoom out / Focus
Increases or decreases the display size the diagram; or focuses the diagram so that it is fully visible.
  • Refresh

Layout and rendering options

Some BPMN tools do not strictly comply with the BPMN 2.0. standard. In case you need to download the BPMN diagram as a BPMN XML file and import it in such a tool, you may need to adjust some layout and rendering options to get the BPMN diagram to display correctly:

Panel with additional rendering and layout options

Click in the arrow at the right hand side to open the panel with additional rendering and layout options for the BPMN diagram.

For each BPMN element, you can configure various settings, such as their dimensions and the font size.

We also offer some presets so that you do not need to configure all options manually. Click on the button at the top to see the available presets, which may be helpful for certain BPMN tools.
